Riding and Regulation is a new set of sessions available for both children and adults at the ranch that helps to build mindfulness and regulation.
Through the partnering with horses we can help others and ourselves form better relationships and be OVERCOMERS! In these sessions we work on building relationships and widening the window of tolerance (the cooperative engaged place we all have between hyper- and hypo-arousal) by supporting the participants and guiding then through the process of building an attuned and connected relationship with themselves and their horse. The window of tolerance is also referred to by Dr. Dan Siegel as the "river of well being" a place from which one is able to respond appropriately and effectively to challenges. A place where there is enough wind to fill our sails as we navigate down the river, but not so much wind that we lose our sense of safety, or wonder. Through the Riding and Regulation sessions we will, with thought and care, be partnering with the horse(s) while working near the edge of the river banks (not the physical river banks but the banks between over and under stimulation) creating challenging but safe environments with the goal of thriving both physically and emotionally. Considering the neurobiological basis of behaviors, we introduce exercises that are rhythmic, patterned, repetitive, and we use bottom up regulation to increase cross brain connections that help both activate and re-organize the mind. We recommend a series of 6 sessions to allow participants to move through the processes of picking their horse and learning the nuanced difference between the roles of submission, appeasement, and compliance in relationships versus the connection that comes from mutual consent and cooperation.
